Donna Ippolito

IFW Instructor

Donna Ippolito has been writing, editing, and teaching others to write for over 20 years.

Her experience includes every kind of non-fiction and fiction manuscript of interest to the general reader—from cookbooks and mountain-climbing guides to psychological self-help, Native American lore, and the search for the Loch Ness monster.

As editor-in-chief, she worked for FASA Corporation, a publisher that packaged best-selling science-fiction and fantasy novel lines for Penguin Books and Time-Warner. These include the popular BattleTech, Shadowrun, Earthdawn, and Vor series. Most of the writers were first- timers, and some went on to become New York Times best-selling authors.

Prior to that, she was editor at The Swallow Press, a small but prestigious publisher of both literary and commercial titles. Writers published by Swallow include celebrated novelist Anaïs Nin; Jungian analyst Linda Leonard; futurist Robert Theobald; Zen poet Lucien Stryk; and distinguished anthropologist W. Y. Evans-Wentz.

“With Donna’s help, I have a much better understanding of the way a writer’s world works. I’m excited by the prospect of getting articles and stories published, something I could barely conceive of two years ago.”

—B.C., Carmi, IL

“Working with Donna is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I’ve learned so much about the craft of writing.”

—T.R., Hallstead, PA

“Donna’s counsel and guidance have allowed me to grow as a writer. While my craft is far from “perfected,” I’ve gained enough confidence to keep writing and submitting.”

—D.B., San Francisco, CA

“Among all the advice on writing, the bottom line is finding a regular time and place to write— even if only 5 minutes a day or 10 minutes a week. Make writing a habit rather than a luxury.”
- Donna Ippolito

As a senior editor at Consumers Digest, Ippolito researched and wrote an investigative article on how the nation’s top 100 charities spend their donation monies. She also acquired and edited articles on funeral fraud; the truth about long-term care insurance; warehouse-club buying; how to avoid pest- control rip-offs, and others.

In recent years, she has presented a series of writing workshops on “the magic of words,” “show don’t tell,” “ideas and inspiration for writers,” and other topics through the Chicago Public Library system. Using techniques to stimulate creativity, Ippolito has also taught writing workshops for high school students under grants from the Illinois Arts Council. In addition, Donna Ippolito is executive editor of www.anaisnin.com, the official Anaïs Nin web site.

Her fiction and nonfiction have been published in East West JournalSmall Press ReviewSunday ClothesJournal of the West, and others.
